Our Mission

The mission of the National Center for Race Amity is to cultivate race amity as the key tool as well as the end goal in advancing access, equity, social justice, and unity.

Impactful programs for professionals in education, government, and the nonprofit and corporate sectors. Training in implicit bias, cross-cultural collaboration, communication, and culturally responsive practices.

The Race Amity Institute building at Be on Edgewood, Atlanta

Race Amity Institute

Our Home in Atlanta's Historic Sweet Auburn

Our first brick-and-mortar facility is located in the Be on Edgewood complex — a historic preservation site in the heart of the neighborhood where Dr. King grew up.

The Institute serves as a center of research, education, training, youth outreach and the arts, featuring:

  • Performance venue
  • Exhibit space
  • Resource library
  • Seminar room

Programming

  • Monthly: Film screenings, speakers, roundtable discussions
  • Quarterly: Half-day symposiums, leadership breakfasts
  • Annual: National conference, Medal of Honor, Riders for Race Amity

Mary McLeod Bethune & Eleanor Roosevelt

1920s–1960s

A daughter of formerly enslaved parents and the First Lady of the United States forged an unlikely friendship that transformed American politics. Together, they fought for civil rights, education, and the dignity of Black Americans — proving that friendship across race can reshape a nation.

Martin Luther King Jr. & Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel

1960s

A Baptist minister and a Jewish rabbi marched arm-in-arm from Selma to Montgomery. Heschel later said he felt like his "legs were praying." Their friendship bridged two communities with shared histories of oppression — and shared dreams of justice.

Harriet Tubman & Thomas Garrett

1840s–1870s

A Quaker stationmaster and the fearless conductor of the Underground Railroad helped over 2,500 enslaved people reach freedom. Garrett risked everything — his fortune, his freedom, his life — because he believed every human being deserves liberty.

Julius Rosenwald & Booker T. Washington

1910s–1930s

A Jewish businessman and a Black educator built over 5,000 schools across the rural South, educating a generation of Black children when America would not. Their partnership proved that generosity and vision can overcome what law and custom cannot.
